Penang is Penice

Today was a blessing because we didn't have to start the day until 9:00 AM. At this point I consider that sleeping in. We had breakfast and then we all got in the bus to start the tour of Penang. The first place we stopped at was the floating mosque. No, it wasn't actually floating, but it was built on the shore of the Indian Ocean. I thought this place was beautiful, the inside was pretty average, but the view was amazing.

After the mosque we went to the fishing port that they have here, I believe they called it Fisherman's Village. I felt the same about this place, it was pretty average, but the view is what makes it special.

Then we visited a batik factory. Batik is a method of producing colored designs on a type of cloth by dyeing it. Usually they are made into shirts. I have always liked the batik shirts, but now I have a new found appreciation for the beauty of them. Watching these women literally paint the design and literally do everything by hand was incredible. I was mesmerized by these women because they were doing these designs so fast and never made a mistake. I was very tempted to buy one for myself, but I am trying to be frugal with my money here.

Following that we ventured into the jungle to try some of the fresh fruit that they had. It was just off to the side of a lonely road, but it was a pretty great fruit stand. Our tour guide let us try a lot of them, the ones I have pictured are the mangosteen and the rambutan. By far my favorite fruit that I've tried is the mangosteen. I loved it so much I even bought some to take back with me to the hotel. I even have a picture of me kissing the bundle that I bought. I thought it was really cool how this place was literally in the middle of nowhere.

After the fruit stand we went into a local village to see what life was really like. It was cool, we just kind of walked through it and looked at some plants. I did get to take a picture with a local little girl which I thought was really fun. She was really shy but warmed up to me after a while.

Then we had a quick lunch and then started our walking tour around the city. The unique thing about Penang was the street art. The art was really cool and well done. Other than that, it was pretty much like all of the other cities that we've been to so far. There was a Chinatown and a Little India with the same shops, with the same stuff for sale. So it was a little boring, although our tour guide is so small and funny. Her name is Sue and I really like her.

We kept walking through the city until we got to the Taoist Snake Temple. To be honest, I expected a lot more with this. I expected to see snakes around every turn, but instead all of the snakes were drugged and didn't move at all. They did have a big snake that moved, but in order to do anything with it you had to pay 15 ringgits.

After the temple we walked to a Peranakan mansion. Basically this was just a really rich person's house and they transformed it to a museum. It was actually pretty cool and definitely was one of the nicest houses I've ever been inside. They had a place in the house where the roof could open and when it was raining it would rain in that specific spot. I thought that was really cool and I wouldn't mind having something like that when I get a mansion. (Kidding) Sue really knew what she was talking about throughout the whole day, but I felt like she knew the most about this place. It was really cool listening to all the little fun facts that were pouring out of her.

When we were done with the museum we went back to the hotel and we had to find dinner for ourselves. So my friends and I decided to go to the food court at the mall. The mall that they have here and it was huge! We had a lot of fun just wandering around and looking at everything that they had to offer.
